George’s at the Cove in downtown La Jolla will close its Ocean Terrace rooftop dining area and bar for remodeling on Monday, November 10. The restaurant’s Level2 dining room and bar will remain open during the project, which is expected to be completed by mid-January 2026.

Also during the remodel period, George’s will add lunch and dinner service in its enclosed lower-level dining room on days when it is not reserved for private events.

The Ocean Terrace remodel will include a new floor, new tabletops, new glass wall, new umbrella plan, and new permanent heaters. The Ocean Terrace last closed for a significant period in 2016, when George’s added an elevated bar area.

“We feel it’s important to continue our investment in a restaurant that has meant so much to so many people over the last four plus decades,” said Operating Partner and Chef Trey Foshee. “Whether dining with us for a special occasion or for an everyday lunch or dinner, we want our guests to feel comfortable, feel at home, and feel like they will always be a part of something special and unique to San Diego with that majestic view of the water.”

This past April, George’s completed a renovation of the Level2 dining area and bar. The covered, but open-air space has a new roof with five retractable awnings, new high-top counter with eight seats facing the water, new dining tables, new or reupholstered furnishings, and new light fixtures.

George Hauer founded George’s at 1250 Prospect Street on August 9, 1984. Originally occupying the first and second levels of the building, the rooftop Ocean Terrace opened in June 1991 to create a three-level ocean view dining destination. Hauer ran the restaurant for the first 16 years until Foshee was brought on as Executive Chef/Partner, shortly after Foshee received Food & Wine magazine’s Best New Chef honors in 1998.

The kitchen team is now led by Foshee, Executive Chef Masa Kojima, and Pastry Chef Anna Adams – all working alongside General Manager Mike Grave.

George’s will host a family-style prix fixe Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday, November 27 in the lower-level dining room, and seatings are available from 2:00 – 7:00 p.m. The price is $90 per person ($45 for kids 12 and under). George’s will also host a three-course prix fixe Christmas Day dinner on Thursday, December 25 in the lower-level dining room for $110 per person (kids a la carte menu also available), and seatings are available from 2:00 – 8:30 p.m. Reservations for both holidays can be made at https://www.georgesatthecove.com/reservations.
