November 3 is National Sandwich Day - the perfect excuse to celebrate two slices of bread that somehow manage to hold a world of flavor. From gooey, cheesy comfort food to stacked creations bursting with bold, adventurous ingredients, San Diego’s sandwich scene proves that greatness comes in layers.

Tour de Tapas featuring “Euro Small Plates & Sips” in La Mesa Village launched lunch service in October, and the new daytime menu features a quartet of sandwiches – Chicken Delight, Roast Beef Deluxe, Mozzarella Caprese, and Smoked Salmon. All are served on warm rustic sourdough bread and are joined by a side of hand-cut potatoes. The restaurant opened last December with dinner service only Tuesday – Sunday. Lunch is now available Tuesday - Friday from 11:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Located in the heart of the Gaslamp, barleymash is where beer, bourbon, and bold flavors collide. Their Crispy Chicken Sando is a game-changer consisting of crispy chicken drizzled with whiskey buffalo sauce, topped with bleu cheese crumbles, tomato, shredded lettuce, and house-made ranch, all on a gourmet bun. Served with house-cut fries and signature “taste” sauce, it’s crispy, saucy, and unforgettable.

Embrace the island vibes at Miss B’s Coconut Club in Mission Beach, a Caribbean-inspired open-air restaurant full of color, character, and coastal charm. Take a mini-vacation with the iconic El Cubano Sandwich—stacked with lechon asado, smoked ham, gruyère, bread & butter pickles, spiced mustard, and cilantro garlic aioli on a toasted Cuban roll. It’s Havana heat meets beachside bliss.

Iconic San Diego restaurant George’s at the Cove has a lunch menu featuring a Grilled Albacore Sandwich with jalapeno cabbage-fennel slaw, and tartar sauce on sourdough bread. Enjoy the seafood favorite overlooking the La Jolla Coastline and Pacific Ocean, a view that has garnered nationwide fame for the restaurant. Not a seafood lover? The Fried Chicken Sandwich with mojo sauce, dijonaise, spicy pickle relish, and Swiss cheese awaits.

If your cravings take you to Carlsbad, stop by PRK 101, the family- and dog-friendly hub known for its smoked meats and backyard-style atmosphere. Their Big BBQ Sandwich is a must-try—your choice of smoked meat (Tri Tip, Pulled Pork, or Cheddar Sausage) piled high with coleslaw and BBQ sauce on a buttery brioche bun. Simple. Saucy. Satisfying.

At Breakfast Republic, mornings get the gourmet treatment. Known for creative twists on American breakfast classics, this SoCal favorite offers the ultimate wake-up bite with its Breakfast Sammie—sourdough stacked with Jurassic Pork bacon, tomato, herb spread, and sunny-side-up eggs, served with house potatoes. It’s the perfect way to start your day.

Craving a sandwich with serious swagger? Head to The Smoking Gun in the Gaslamp Quarter, where bold, Southern-inspired fare and smoked meats rule the menu. Their Smoked Brisket Sandwich is a slow-cooked showstopper with juicy prime brisket, tangy pickled onions, fresh tomato, baby spinach, and BBQ mustard are stacked high on golden toasted sourdough, with a side of bbq au jus for the ultimate dunk.

At The Duck Dive, in Pacific Beach, you’ll find more than just surf vibes and sandy toes - it’s home to one of the cheesiest, dreamiest melts in the city. The Turkey Melt is a comfort classic, loaded with tender turkey, melted cheddar, crisp house slaw, tomato, green onion, and served on a soft, warm pretzel bun. Pair it with a beachside breeze and a cold local brew, and you’ve got a seaside bite worth repeating.

All five Spill the Beans locations feature a delicious variety of breakfast sandos, including fan favorite San Dieggo. The most popular bagel sando comes served with three slices of thick cut peppered bacon, two over-medium fried eggs, two slices of American cheese and a slice of pepper jack, with cayenne aioli. If you’re looking for something a little lighter while still getting your protein fix, might we suggest the Thighmaster made with red-chili garlic cream cheese, egg whites, sliced tomatoes, and arugula, with the option to add bacon, sausage, or vegan sausage.

Who knew two slices of bread could hold so much flavor, fun, and personality? From beachside melts to barbecue stacks and tropical Cubanos, San Diego’s sandwich scene proves there’s no wrong way to layer it up.
